Coach Brian, Coach Mike and Coach Grace run the DC Sled Shark Bench. Peter Carlson is the team manager. Together we put the finest group of young men and women in the DC metro area on the ice to form the DC Sled Sharks.
March: Juke your man. This month we will work on a few drills that will help develop stick handling skills. One of them includes pulling the puck under you sled. At home you can sit in your sled, grab a tennis ball and practice pushing it back and forth with both sticks.
April: Ice time is few and far between...the Caps are finished, let's focus on the Summer. Do you have your equipment? Do you need to resize your sled? Tape those sticks and sharpen your skates...summer practice is coming soon.
May: Build muscle and hand eye coordination by playing soccer, tennis, basketball, etc. Don't know how to get started? Call me or ask Joan.
June tip of the month: Puck control is difficult to learn because you only have an hour of ice team a week. Grab a ball and practice playing at home! Don’t have a ball? Grab your Mom/Dad or guardian and put them in front of the laundry hamper...make them take off their socks and roll them up into a ball. Now take a few shoots with their socks! After they make a few saves with the ol' stink puck, I bet they will decide it's time for you to get a new ball!!
July tip of the month: Build strength in you arms by doing push ups, dips and pull ups. Strong bi’s and tri’s go a long way on the ice!
August tip of the month: Put skate guards on your sled blades and practice falling while you watch T.V. It is great strength training for your upper body and it will help you achieve quick recovery during game play! Stregthen your core and you will see a huge change in your game next season.
September tip of the month: Sled Sharks season begins with 3 games and a practice. Talk over the rules of the game at the dinner table. Discuss off-sides, icing, and penalties. How many penalties can you discuss? Hope you're hungry!
